To ensure the power system is operated in a reliable manner, NEMMCO monitors the balance between supply and demand and carries out an assessment regarding the adequacy of reserves. The Market is encouraged to respond when reserves are inadequate. However, should the reserve situation not be resolved after alternative measures have been exhausted then the National Electricity Code provides for a reliability safety net through which NEMMCO may seek the provision of capacity reserves.
